Functional Object - Tramcar component, Duncan and Fraser, 1887?
Bell portion of a tramcar conductor's bell. Approximately. 100mm diameter, about 35mm deep with a raised or bossed hole at the top 4.5mm at the top. Bell possibly cast or pressed brass, appears to have been damaged or repaired due to excess brass in portion of the bell and on the underside where signs of brass welding are apparent. If from a horse tram, would have most likely been made by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide SA. Given to the BTM 1995 by Doug Prosser, of the TMSV, said to be from Ballarat Horse Tram No. 1. horse trams, duncan & fraser, conductors bell, tramcar component -

Colour poster on glossy white paper advertising a new stamp issue on Australia's Historic tramways, 1989. On the poster's background is a Melbourne cable tram set on the Prahran route, printed in black and white, has "Australia Historic Tramways" as a banner, "New Stamp Issue" in the form of a cancellation stamp with a Melbourne tram in the centre and featuring in enlarged full colour reproductions the following 41c stamps that were the special issue: Adelaide Horse Tram - 1878 Sydney Steam Tram - 1884 Melbourne cable tram - 1886 Hobart double deck electric tram - 1893 Brisbane combination electric tram - 1901. On the base of the poster is an announcement concerning the stamp show at the Melbourne Exhibition buildings 18-22 October. 1989. See Reg. Five page handwritten letter on light brown or fawn lined paper within a brown envelope within Reg. Item 2488, page 105. The envelope has been glued to the back cover of the book and is address to "Mr. James Inspector / Electric Supply". Seven overseas stamps have been stuck to the envelope. The letter dated 11/10/1937 from an unknown person who lived at 305 Eyre St Ballarat, not signed, outlines the building the horse tram depot in Wendouree Parade. The person put in a quote as the plumber. Notes various aspects of working on the site, materials, difficulties, Thompson and Moore of the Adelaide as the contractors, number of people on the job, problems with the construction, wind damage, building the workers cottages, their rooves and the cash boxes for the conductors. Black and white photograph contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 3 of the pattern Ballaarat Tramway Co. Ltd outside the Duncan & Fraser's Carriage Works in Adelaide. Has a Australian 2d stamp (1936 South Australian Centenary) over the top right hand corner. Has been cut from a larger photograph. Handwritten notes in pencil noting the time of the photograph, the tram weight, couplings, lamp brackets, the possible purpose of the photograph, the incompleteness of the tram when compared to actual running condition. Dated 7/1/1940. Also notes on the 3 legged stool used by the horse tram drivers and the double decked buses operating then in Melbourne ( Bourke St.). Has sketch of the stool in ink. Copy of a letter and associated documents written to the Town Clerk, City of Ballaarat, dated Aug 1, 1985 seeking the support of the Council in attaining the body of the tramcar in Ballarat East. (Tram was actually obtained in December). Signed by the Secretary, Richard Gilbert. Mentions Frank Hanrahan as President for further information. Enclosed within letter is a two page note on BTPS Letter head outlining the history of the tramcar, its restoration, current condition, possible operation and value of the restoration. Attached as well is a folded drawing out an Adelaide double deck horse tram (Reference Reg. Item No. 706.1 ) and a photocopy of the builders of the first horse tram at the depot in 1887 (Reference Reg. Item No. 765 ). Printed in green ink and then over printed in a silver ink to highlight the locomotive. On the rear of the illustration has been printed details of the locomotive (Light Pacific Engine), designed and built at SAR's Islington Workshops. Gives details of the locomotive, SAR's service. Notes that SAR has given 80 years of service. Printed by the Government Printer Adelaide. Reference -"Kings of the Iron Horse" by David Burke, page 164 -5 - gives details of the launch of the locomotive, 'Sir Winston Dugan', then Governor of South Australia. Photo of the launch and locomotive on opposite page 196. Would probably have been made for the launch of locomotive or soon after.
